Title Research Analysis

Write an 8 to 10 sentence summary explaining the usage of titles in the film or series you chose. Consider discussing whether or not the title usage gives away the genre of the project (does it set up a theme or tone related to the genre of the film or series? or other details you would like to point out for the genre conventions). 

Then look at the styles Art of the Title classifies your selection with (like opening scene, type over scene, etc.) and consider if your selection will be similar or different to how you are planning on using titles in your own opening sequence.  Feel free to use any of your discussion to talk about how you think you can effectively use titles to help convey meaning in your opening sequence.

Succession (2018) is an HBO TV series that details a family's actions and the battle between siblings of a media executive whose health is declining and the plans for which member of the family takes over the business is uncertain. The show is inspired by the real-life Murdoch family, which controls Fox Corp and News Corp, which includes  major media and journalism outlets. The usage of titles helps give away some context of the series where there are photographs and video that is created to give a retro feel to show the age of a photo, and said photos show the siblings spending childhood time together and with their father, the media executive. The addition of skyscrapers, media screens projected on buildings, and the urban landscape gives a sense of power that the family holds. This infers how the family business is a major business player and has influence over society (through their news publications and services). The alternating sequences of family memories and photos and the modern city buildings show a contrast between family ties and harmony that will be soon tested in a battle between the siblings for control of the family media empire. 

Art of the Title classifies the TV show's sequence titles as "2010s, live action, main title". My sequence titles plan to have live action where real people and characters are interacting and being portrayed in their world around them as the film begins. There will also be some typeovers to list the cast and crew as the opening sequence progresses. I intend to use the titles as a way to convey meaning by hooking the audience into a deepening mystery that will occur over the course of the film by introducing a plot event that is an inciting incident to set the film in motion through sequential events that occur in a short timespan, enough to fit within two minutes of content.
